I-26 Widening (MM 85-101) – Richland, Lexington, and Newberry Counties, SC

As the Lead/Primary Designer on the Archer Western Construction, LLC and United Infrastructure Group, Inc (AUJV) Design Build Team. ICE was responsible for all engineering, design, and QC services for this 16-mile widening and reconstruction project that includes three new interchanges and eight overpasses north of Columbia from mile marker 85 to 101. This project was separated into three segments:

  • Segment 1 | 5.4 miles long and consisted of an 8-lane mainline section with a DDI Interchange at US 176 – Broad River Road (Exit 97) and two crossroad structure replacements at Shady Grove and Koon Road.
  • Segment 2 | 5.5 miles long and consisted of a six-lane mainline section with a partial cloverleaf interchange at Exit 91 and two crossroad structure replacements at Mt. Vernon Church Road and Old Hilton Road.
  • Segment 3 | 5.93 miles long and consisted of a 6-lane mainline section with an improvement with SC 202 (Exit 85) and three crossroad structure replacements at Parr Road, Holy Trinity Church Road and Peak Street.

Additionally, two noise walls were designed and constructed to mitigate sound disturbances in Segments 1 and 2. In Segment 1, a 2,121-foot noise wall was constructed on the eastbound side, positioned to buffer the Arbor Springs neighborhood from traffic noise. In Segment 2, a 4,220-foot noise wall was built along the westbound side adjacent to the Wescott Ridge neighborhood.

ICE received numerous compliments for SCDOT including “Designer has been very responsive and has responded several times to us on request for plans and revisions for right-of-way issues. They have a good team relationship and are working together to complete the job.” and “The design teams performance during [this] period has continued to be above the minimum expectations. On [a] project of this size the designer continues to be out in front of any changes needed to keep the Contractor working and the lines of communication are very open between SCDOT design and Lead Design team.”
